Independent Reading Resources

On this page, you will find resources that were shared at the first training in June 2016 and new resources as they become available.  Please send us any new resources that you try and with which you have success with students.

Here is a summary of the list of resources and ideas that we generated at the June 2016 training with embedded links:

Why Read

It might be helpful to have students help generate a list of the benefits of reading.

Say Something Rubric

Create a rubric with sample responses on a large, color-coded poster & display prominently. Have them self-assess w/ it.

Student Generated Assessment Criteria

Ask the students what makes quality work & then generate the rubric. Have them self-assess w/ it.

Sample Issues from Student IR Books

Generate a list of issues in the IR books. This makes a great list of topics for writing. Teach them how to use novels as evidence.

Sample Theses from Student IR Book Topics

From the student generated topics, create universal ideas and/or thesis statements that could be used for writing pieces.

Quick Book Eval

Take the format from Good Reads & Amazon. Create a physical rating sheet for students to evaluate the IR books as they finish or type them & attach a QR code.
